Cool Integrations: Lijit on Tumblr

Tumblr is a relatively new blogging platform that allows for easy short form posting of content, audio and video. It is highly customizable, and very easy to use, but interestingly, it is missing the ability to search through posts. Enter our Lijit Search Wijit.

Tumblr makes it very easy to add custom HTML and javascript to the layout.  For example, my tumblog, has a completed customized theme, and includes the Lijit Search Wijit.

So how was I able to add Lijit to my tumblog? It just a few simple steps:

Step 1:

Sign up for Lijit. If you already have an account, just log in, and navigate to the link “My Search Wijit.”

Step 2:

Add your social content and build out your network. (If you have already done this, skip this step).

Step 3:

Customize your Wijit to fit your Tumblr theme. You are only constrained by the theme’s layout. Then click on “Install the Wijit.”

Step 4:

Select and copy the code on the right hand side of the page. It should look like this:

<script type=”text/javascript” src=”http://www.lijit.com/informers/wijits?type=pvs&username=username&js=1″></script><a style=’color: #999′ href=’http://www.lijit.com’ id=’lijit_wijit_pvs_link’>Lijit Search</a>

Now comes the hard part:

Step 5:

Login into your Tumblr account. Click on the customize icon:

Customize Button

Step 6:

In the Description field, paste the code you copied from your Lijit account where you want it to appear. (I decided to put it after a bit of text):

Insert Code

Step 7:

click “Save Changes.”

All done.  Yup, it is that easy to install Lijit in Tumblr.

Want a couple of other examples outside of my tumblog?

  • i am also having the same problem. i am using custom css and it pushes it all the way to the right. also, my search box isn't able to be typed in. let me know if you have any fixes for this. thank you.

I'm not using any custom CSS, and the lijit search box is also pushed way to the right. Any fix yet?
  • @nixta

I use a custom URL (http://www.micahbaldwin.com) and Lijit works fine. Partly, because the variation in Tumblr themes, sometimes the description box gets a bit wonky.

But, you have the widget installed correctly. I did search for "magical occasion your childhood dreams" which is unique content on your tumblr, and a result returns. It also found older content with this search "poking fun at those affected by the recent underwater cable cuts."

It sometimes takes a little while for everything to index, so maybe that was it?
  • Hi Micah,

I followed in Lindsay's footsteps a while back when she added Lijit, but I could never get it to index http://nixtarolls.nixta.com properly. I couldn't see any way to add anything other than an RSS feed.

Does this mean that only the things added since I integrated Lijit will show up on searches? Does it mean I've done it wrong? I haven't been able to sit down the Lindsay yet and figure out what she's done to make it work for her. Is it because I use a custom URL?

Any help would be great. I came to this page a few days ago hoping to find a whole tome of information under step 2 above, but there was none :)

    Cheers,

    Nixta
  • Tim,

It appears that your custom CSS has driven the search box all the way to the right of the page (scroll over to the right). I have asked one of our developers to see if they could provide you with a CSS hack to make it work. It should work with any of the default themes (even if you play with the colors).

Check your email shortly, I will send you the CSS hack when I get it. In addition, I will post it here.
  • Tim
Thanks for posting these directions. I followed the steps above and added the Lijit code in the 'Description' form and below the existing text/code that was already there and that I added previously. No luck. Do you know if existing code in the 'Description' form would interfere with the Lijit code? Any help would be appreciated. Thx.
