Entering a report

To enter a report you must be logged into Lijit and have already installed the Lijit add-on for Mozilla Firefox or Internet Explorer, or be using the bookmarklets for Safari/other browsers. (The process described in detail here will outline procedures specific to the Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer experiences, though bookmarklet users should be able to follow along without much trouble.)

To enter a report:

1. Open your Lijit browser sidebar (if it’s not already open). You can open your sidebar by clicking the Lijit toolbar icon in Mozilla Firefox or by clicking the Enter Report button on your Internet Explorer toolbar.

2. Once your Lijit sidebar is open, click the enter a report heading, which will open the form to enter a report.

3. Confirm that the pre-populated scope for this report is accurate. For example, if you’re making a report on a particular page, you’ll want to use the “page” scope. If you’re making a report on an entire site, you’ll want to use the “domain” scope. If you’re reporting on something in-between (and if you are, you’ll know it), use the “subdomain” scope. 4. Confirm the pre-populated URL - make sure it's the URL upon which you want to enter the report. (You probably won’t change the URL much.)

5. Give the report a rating:

good: You like this site/page/blog post and want others in your trusted network to know that. You think it provides good information that is some way useful, be it educational, entertaining, or what have you.

bad: You want your network to be warned against this site/page/blog post for some reason. Maybe you've had bad experiences with a company or product. Maybe a site has too many pop-up ads. Maybe you disagree with what a particular blogger has to say. For whatever the reason you think something is the opposite of good, a bad report will inform members of your network about it and hopefully spare them from having to go through the same experiences themselves.

dangerous: Try to reserve dangerous reports for sites that actually intend to do harm. These are sites you want informers in your network to avoid at all costs! They likely promote spyware, malware, adware, crapware, viruses, phishing, and dialers and should be marked as what they are - the absolute worst.

6. Check the pre-populated title - make sure it's reflective of how you’d like to title your report. You’re welcome to change it, just make sure your title is descriptive and helpful for the informers in your network. (Please note that the title does not pre-populate for Internet Explorer users. We’re sorry about that and hope to remedy it in an upcoming release.)

7. Enter some comments about the site/page/blog post upon which you’re reporting. Tell everyone how you really feel about it! Comments help make reports more relevant to your network; while you might rate a page about digital cameras as “good”, people in your network will know that you're totally enamored with the page when you add the comments, “This page offers the most informative compilation of data on digital cameras known to man.”

8. Enter some subjects that relate to the content on this site/page/blog post. Using the subjects you can describe the page, such as “digital”, "cameras“, "photography”, and “informative”, in order to make it easier for you and your network to search for (and find!) that information later on.

9. Click the enter report button at the bottom of the form.

Your report will magically appear in your browser sidebar, in the list of reports on your profile page, in the Lijit Lists of those who trust you and to informers in your trusted network as they surf!
